Clean Water Responsibility & Wetlands Stewardship
At Flamingo Horticulture Kenya, responsible water stewardship is central to how we farm, protect ecosystems, and sustain communities. Through innovation, natural systems, and closed‑loop technologies, we minimise water use while maximising environmental benefit protecting Lake Naivasha and its surrounding wetlands for generations to come.
Responsible Water Management in Action
Recycling & Closed-Loop Irrigation
We operate closed-loop irrigation systems that ensure water is continuously recycled and reused. Hydroponic water is recirculated within the system, significantly reducing abstraction while maintaining optimal growing conditions.
Industry-Leading Water Storage
Flamingo has the largest water storage capacity in Kenya, designed to fully utilise natural flood flows. This enables us to store sufficient water to sustain operations for up to six months, reducing pressure on local water sources during dry periods.
Rainwater Capture
Our facilities are equipped for active rainwater harvesting, capturing water from buildings, growing tunnels, and infrastructure surfaces, maximising every drop of natural rainfall.
Advanced Water Cleaning
- Reverse osmosis systems for high-grade purification
- Constructed riparian and wetland environments, using natural biological processes to clean and restore water
The result is reduced overall water usage and minimal environmental impact across all farming activities.
Maji Safi – The Lungs of the Lake
Flamingo pioneered the use of constructed wetlands to naturally purify spent farm water, an initiative locally known as Maji Safi, meaning clean water.
How the Wetlands Work
- Nile cabbage absorbs excess nutrients and impurities
- As water flows from pool to pool, it becomes progressively cleaner
- Final output water is clean enough to drink
Restoring Biodiversity
- Birds thrive in the restored habitats
- Native plants flourish
- Invertebrates repopulate the ecosystem naturally
These living systems improve water quality while enhancing biodiversity around Lake Naivasha.
Papyrus Protection & Regeneration
- Filters excess nutrients
- Prevents shoreline erosion
- Stabilises lake ecosystems
- Nurtured within the wetlands
- Carefully transplanted along the lake shoreline
- Used to reinforce natural buffers around the lake
